Year one and Year two First Communion Program

This years program will be different. We are asking that at least one parent be present for four (4) parent meetings. I understand that these are mandatory for my child to receive the sacrament.

El programa de este año será diferente. Pedimos que al menos uno de los padres esté presente en cuatro (4) reuniones de padres. Entiendo que estas juntas son obligatorios para que mi hijo reciba los sacramentos.

Please contact the Faith Formation Center at (909) 626-3596, ext. 4212 for more information.

Welcome:

We welcome you and are glad you have chosen to prepare your child for First Holy Communion. This introduces Families of Faith, our model of preparation for First Communion.

Mission:

The mission of Families of Faith at OLA is to develop strong households of faith that are rooted in the Gospel of Christ, connected to the parish, and engaged in the sacramental and liturgical life of the parish.

Goals:

  • Promote family holiness.
  • Initiate new members into the Catholic Faith.
  • Strengthen the personal faith of parents and increase their knowledge of Catholic Faith.
  • Equip parents to share and teach the faith to their children.

Our First communion program is a two consecutive year program

Every year we face the reality that preparing children to receive First Communion does little to increase the faith and the holiness of the home. It is not just a matter of teaching children to say their prayers, but helping the entire family to become more prayerful.

It is not just a matter of preparing a child to receive Christ on the day of their First Holy Communion, but of helping the entire family to receive Christ into their homes every day.

At Our Lady of the Assumption we are convinced that in order for families to grow closer to God and become more holy, we must equip the strongest members of the family with knowledge and experience to help the entire family to grow stronger in faith.

YEAR TWO children come to weekly classes every Wednesday from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. or Sunday from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. to prepare for the sacraments of Reconciliation and First Communion. Parents come to four mandatory parent meetings "The Search". Fees for year two are $125 per child, this includes all fees for reconciliation and First Communion.

Sacramental Preparation

Elementary (Grades 2-5): First Reconciliation & First Communion

  • This is a two-year preparation process.
  • Weekly Sunday Mass attendance
  • Weekly class attendance and participation is required.
  • Children will prepare for both First Reconciliation and First Communion.
  • In Year 2, families will attend a Parent & Child One-Day Retreat

We invite all families to attend SUNDAY MASS as part of their preparation for the sacraments.

Commitment & Participation Requirements

To honor the sacredness of these sacraments, all participants in Sacramental Preparation and families are expected to observe the following:

Sunday Mass Attendance (Required for All Participants)

All individuals in sacramental preparation must attend Mass every Sunday.

Children in Grades 2–8 must attend Mass with a parent.

Teen Confirmandi can attend Sunday Mass alone with parental permission.

Parent Commitment

Parents are the primary teachers and examples of the Catholic faith. Parent formation is to support building a rich and vibrant Domestic Church in each home. Sacramental Preparation is a whole-family experience, a time for the whole family to grow in the life of the Church.

Parents of children in grades 2–12 must attend:

Weekly Sunday Mass

One Parent Formation Meeting per month

Additional required events such as:

Rites and rituals

Eucharistic Adoration

Sacrament-specific rehearsals

Parent & Child One-Day Retreat (FHC & OCIC Year 2)

Sacramental Preparation Events

Attendance is expected at all Sacramental Preparation Events , which include spiritual, instructional, and community-building experiences related to the sacraments being received. We are honored to walk with you and your family during this sacred time of growth and grace.  IF you have any questions, please contact the parish office at 909-626-3596.
