In an earlier era, the emphasis during Lent was on sacrifice, fasting and repentance. Today, our Lenten experience continues to emphasize personal sacrifice and soul-searching, but it is also a time for spiritual growth, acts of mercy and preparations for the great feast of Easter!
Catholics 18-59 years of age in good health must fast (only one full meal) on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. In addition, all Catholics age 14 and older must abstain from meat Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent.
During Lent, we will “fast” from noise and observe ten minutes of silence prior to Mass. The assembly will be gathered and dismissed in silence with a bell, but no hymn.
