Ash Wednesday is Feb. 10

Today, the Church embarks on a forty-day retreat called Lent to prepare for the celebration of Easter. We join with the elect, those preparing to receive the three sacraments of initiation at Easter, in slowing down and considering the places in our lives that need to be transformed. The three disciplines of the Lenten season, prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, help us open ourselves to God’s goodness and can draw us closer to the heart of Christ. Catholics 18-59 years of age in good health must fast (only one full meal) on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. In addition, all Catholics age 14 and older must abstain from meat Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent.
