SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER — Year C (45)
SHALOM!
First Reading: Acts of the Apostles 5:12-16
This readings gives us another insight into the spirit of the early Christian community in Jerusalem under the leadership of the apostles. (See also the Second Sunday of Easter, Year B.) They were seen as having the power to continue the messianic ministry of Jesus by performing the same signs he did. These miracles were also an indication of the victory over evil and the restoration of order in creation that had been accomplished in Christ.
Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 118:2-4, 13-15, 22-24
This hymn of praise recounts God’s deliverance of his faithful servant from death, and glorifies God for it. Vv 22-24, while referring to the oppressed nation of Israel directly, is also a beautiful summary of God’s power in raising Jesus to life, and establishing him as Lord of all creation. Response: "Give thanks to the Lord for he is good, his love is everlasting."
Second Reading: Revelation 1:9-11, 12-13, 17-19
The book of Revelation, which is read throughout Easter season this year, opens with John’s vision that is connected with the eucharist, celebrated on the Lord’s day (v 10). The Son of Man, recalling the visions of Dn 7 and 10, and Ez 1:24-26, is the Lord of all history, and therefore he will be the judge on the last day. At this time, however, he is unfolding his view of the world. The book begins with an inspection and evaluation of seven churches (chapters 2-3), and continues with the assurance of victory of God’s power over the forces of evil that was then being experienced — and continues to be experienced to this day.
Questions for thought, discussion, and prayer:
1. How have you seen Christ in the Christian lives of others?
2. Can we recapture in our day something of the spirit that characterized the early Church as told in the Acts of the Apostles?
