SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER — Year B (44)

ONE HEART AND ONE MIND

Gospel: See Year A.

First Reading: Acts of the Apostles 2:32-35

This reading gives us a glimpse of the spirit of the early Christian community in Jerusalem. The unity of worship (see 2:42-47) and unity of faith (v 32) cannot be separated from unity of genuine selfless love. The common bond manifested here is in itself the most powerful witness to the presence of the risen Jesus.

Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 118:2-4, 13-15, 22-24

This hymn of praise recounts God’s deliverance of his faithful servant from death, and is a song of God’s glory. Vv 22-24, while referring to the oppressed nation of Israel directly, is also a beautiful summary of God’s power raising Jesus to life, and establishing him as Lord of all creation. Response: "Give thanks to the Lord for he is good, his love is everlasting."

Second Reading: 1 John 5:1-6

The most effective sign that can lead one to faith is the experience of the power of faith as found in the Christian community. Personal faith in Jesus as Messiah overcomes the worldly spirit that can drag us down. A child of God lives as a child of God — and that life cannot help but be visible, and make present the love of God in an outward, noticeable fashion. In terms of witness (= evangelization = making present the good news of God’s kingdom) the way we as Church live what we believe is far more important than anything we say about it. This letter will continue to be read through Easter season this year.

Questions for thought, discussion, and prayer:

1. How have you seen Christ in the Christian lives of others?

2. Can we recapture something of the spirit that characterized the early community as depicted in the Acts of the Apostles? What can be done in your own life, your family, your parish, your diocese?
